2022 HONDA CIVIC VS. 2022 HYUNDAI ELANTRA: OUTRAGEOUS DOMINATION

2022 HONDA CIVIC VS. 2022 HYUNDAI ELANTRA: OUTRAGEOUS DOMINATION

Cars are declining across the industry in relation to SUVs, but there is one category where the car remains very popular with everyone, and that is the compact segment.

There, we find products that are still selling well and that make those who buy them happy. Among them are the Honda Civic 2022 and the 2022 Hyundai Elantra. The former is getting a makeover this year while the latter was also redesigned recently.

That said, the Honda Civic was the best-selling car once again in Canada last year, and there are multiple reasons that explain the Civic’s popularity. Let’s take a closer look at what the Civic has to offer compared to the Hyundai Elantra.

Quality

Hyundai has made incredible progress over the past 20 years. In fact, each new generation of Hyundai models is proof of this as the quality of what is being presented is constantly evolving.

When you measure Hyundai's quality against some of its rivals across the industry, you have to admit that the Korean firm is often ahead. However, this is not the case when the comparison involves a Honda product, in this case the Civic.

Once again, the Elantra may offer a nice environment, but everything is superior in the new Civic. The quality of the materials and craftsmanship, the visual presentation, the layout of the controls, the user-friendliness of the multimedia system, the driving position, everything is perfect.

No hatchbacks

A sedan is practical. However, it can't be as practical as a model that offers a fifth door in the back. At Honda, this type of body configuration has been available on the Civic since 2017. On Hyundai's side, they once offered the Elantra with a hatchback configuration. Unfortunately, with the new generation, consumers no longer find this option. It's sad, but anyone looking for a versatile compact car on the market is sure to find something with the Civic, but not with the Elantra.

More convincing powertrains

Under the hood, Hyundai has made immense progress. The new Elantra even offers more than one engine. There are even three. Honda doesn't let that stop them, because the Civic is available with four different mechanical configurations.

What's more, when you compare similar versions, the power is higher each time, always in favor of the model offered by Honda.

For example, the base version of the Civic is equipped with a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine that delivers 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. Hyundai counters that with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, but it only delivers 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque.

Moving up the lineup, there's a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with the Elantra N, as well as a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with the Si version of the Civic. Here, we're practically on a par, but the flexibility and frugality of the Honda engine outweighs Hyundai's proposition.

The Korean company could claim victory with the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine in the N version of the Elantra, as this unit offers 276 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque. Unfortunately for the Elantra, Honda still has the upper hand with the 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine of the Civic Type R. The new model that's about to appear will offer at least what the old one did, i.e. 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

The evidence is strong. Hyundai does well, but Honda does better. As a consumer, the choice is clear.
